Article: Best carrying bags for Panasonic/Olympus micro four thirds system

So why are you owning a m4/3 system right now? One of the reason is probably because they are much easier on your shoulders. Both bodies and lenses are significantly smaller than those found in APS-C or full-frame side of the world. So it is probably safe to assume you are looking for a bag that will fullfill this role – a bag that is both light and small but carries just enough equipment for your favourite trips. Just as important is that these bags must not look like regular camera bags – that’s just asking for trouble.

So what are the GOOD options on the market right now?

Here are some of the bags you should consider.

Light and small category

You want to carry as little as possible. A camera body and two pancake lenses or one small zoom and one pancake lens. Plus some small personal belongings. These are very light to carry and virtually cause no stress to your shoulder.

Medium category

You want some flexibilities without compromising on the size or the weight. You want to carry a body, couple of pancakes and perhaps two sizeable zoom lenses. Although larger, they will still be compact enough to carry anywhere without a sweat.

Heavy (for micro four thirds) and big category

Albeit being marked as heavy here, these would probably be medium-sized if they were to carry traditional DSLR equipments. Due to more compact dimension of micro four third equipment, you can carry plenty of equipments in these bags. If you are a gear nut, this is the way to go.

Crumpler 2 Million Dollar Home - Small size

This is a relatively small bag but it will still let you carry a decent amount of camera equipment. This one is big enough to carry one of the micro four third body, plus couple of pancake lenses. You can also take one of the smaller zoom if you are willing to detach it from the body. As usual with all Crumpler bags, this one is built well using high quality materials. One potential problem with this (and other Crumpler bags) might be that some thieves may recognize the brand Crumpler as a high-end camera bag.

The dimensions are 5.9″ W x 7.7″ H x 3.9″ D (15cm x 19.5cm x 10cm).

Think Tank Retrospective 5 - Medium size

This is probably the best choice overall in the medium category. Not cheap, but built with high quality materials and also supplied with plenty of dividers. Dividers are not cushy but pretty soft enough for the equipment and quite thin – a space saving design. Looks completely non-camera-bag-like and also features some space for other accessories. You can fit a camera body with a lens mounted, two large lenses, plus two more smaller lenses.

The dimensions are 10″ W x 8.5″ H x 6″ D (25.5 x 21.5 x 15 cm), weighing 2.3 lbs (1.0 kg) – a little on the heavy side in this category.

Domke F-5xb - Medium size

This one is a bit smaller than Retrospective 5. Quality-wise, it is still well above what’s available out there. You will still be able to fit a body along with two decent sized lenses in this bag.

You will probably want to remove that bright red “Domke” logo. Those who tried claim this is relatively easy to perform.

Price-wise, this is significantly cheaper than the Retrospective 5.

Size-wise, this bag is 10.5 x 4.5 x 6.5″ (26.5 x 11.5 x 16.5cm) (WxDxH) and weighs 1.0 lbs 4.0 oz (567g).

Think Tank Retrospective 10 - Large size

Once again, this Think Tank bag is probably the best choice if you are looking for some flexibilities. Quite a bit larger than Retrospective 5, but nearly identical in terms of how it looks and how it is organized. If you own one of the larger micro four thirds (such as Panasonic GH2), plus large lenses, this is probably the best option. Just like the Retrospective 5, dividers are not cushy but plenty soft enough for the equipment and are thin – a space saving design.

This bag is sized 13” W x 10.5” H x 7” D (33 x 26.7 x 17.8 cm) and weighs  3 lbs (1.4 kg).
