According to the ‘trusted source’ from 43rumors, this highly anticipated lens from Panasonic is going to be released this August/September time frame, presumably in time to appear in Photokina. Remember, their other bright zoom lens, the 12-35mm is going to be released somewhat sooner, at around June time frame. With the introduction of these lenses along with Olympus 75mm f1.8 and 60mm macro, 2012 is turning out to be yet another great year for the m43 system…

I was wondering what the depth of field would be like of this lens compared to an APS-C sensor camera at an identical focal length (with a 1.6x crop factor the equivalent focal length on Canon 7D would equal 125mm) so I did some very geeky calculations (it’s late, I’m bored..):
If both cameras were 5 meteres from the object and the lens was set to f2.8…
MFT camera + this lens = 24cm DOF
Canon 7D + 125mm lens = 17cm DOF
This lens would give 30% less DOF. Not bad at all. Now make it F2 and blow everything else away
Not bad indeed… But if you want shallower DOF, surely, you’d want the Oly 75mm instead?
Can’t…. stop…. buying….. awesome….. lenses….
help meeee……
This lens if far more appealing to me than the Olympus 75mm. I’m not a big fan of telephoto primes. Besides, f2.8 at 100mm is actually narrower DOF than 75mm f1.8.
Using the same test set up of a 5m object, there is only a 2cm DOF difference between this lens and the 75mm the only thing is you’ll have to take a step or two back to take in the same scene at 100mm which would lose some bokeh.
Both would be great but a f1.8 lens is just too tempting.
I wonder which could produce nicer bokeh? I like the Olympus 45mm mainly because of that…
