A new M43 camera to be released by Olympus

If you recall, there has been some rumors circulating around that a follow-up to E-P3 is coming (as well as higher end OM-D). According to 43rumors, this new model will likely to come towards the end of Jan 2013. I’m completely speculating this and call the model E-P5. They do call it a “PEN” model, and I doubt they will make another model below E-PM2, and definitely not in between E-PL5 and E-PM2, so it has to be more enthusiast friendly than the E-PL5, which is a good news. I’m personally hoping that the E-P5 would be E-PL5 plus a built-in EVF, and some additional control dials, but keep the size to no bigger than E-P3. I guess I’m asking for something similar to NEX-6 body, but for M43 system, of course.

  1. Is there really any space in their lineup for this? The E-PL5 and OM-D already use the same sensor. If you made a deluxe version of the E-PL5, it would make it very difficult/confusing to the user who isn’t sure which to buy. I don’t like it when companies do this. For example, car companies will often have a $35k trim and a $38k trim. That’s less than 10% price difference but it’s still three grand. There should be very clear defined price and feature points and someone shouldn’t be stressed with decided “oh if I only saved $150 more, I could get the next one up”

    • I believe there is one. Initially, I was waiting for something like E-P5 because E-M5 was too heavy and the EVF sticks out which makes it more difficult to store in the bag. So this is a portable version of E-M5 with few features missing, but not much cheaper – for people who value portability even if there’s a price premium on it.

My ideal camera would have been the E-M5 minus the hump, and a bit less weight. But I realize this isn’t possible – 5-axis IBIS won’t fit in a package like E-P5.

      • I agree, and have been hoping for a replacement for the PEN P3 for quite a while. Mainly because I have massive ape hands and the form factor of either the PL5 and XZ-2 don’t seem to fit well or confidently. I tried the OMD-M5 but did not like the sharp lines and hump and felt that they should have increased the height of the body and incorporated a built in EV-Finder. The main reason to wait, and not buy a Sony Nex6 is that Olympus cameras churn out superior Jpegs, and I don’t need the hassle of post-processing, which shoud not be necessary if the camera is doing it’s job, unless u have special efx needs, that is. Cheers and Give us your best Oly.

        • I only shoot RAW under challenging conditions. The E-M5 produces really pleasing JPEGs at least for me. And although NEX-6 is a very nice camera, I’m already spoiled with the lens selection available in M43 eco-system. I’m not sure if I can ever get out of this system now… :)

    • I think that they will push the OMD-M5 as the new Pro camera, with some E5 style additions, perhaps replacing the old E5 and other E series cameras that still sell at some stores. Is there any money to be made in those still? So the lineup would be 1 Pen mini (PM2), 1 PEN lite (PL5), and 1 PEN major (P5), with the new Pro OMD-M5x satisfying the Pros. But they really need to discontinue about half of the point and shoot cameras unless they are still high-margin?? who knows…

      • Olympus did mention that they will release a body above the E-M5.. I’m assuming it was a typo when you said OMD-M5 (should read OM-D E-M5).
