Canon G2 X coming soon?

Photographybay (via Canon Rumors) is speculating that the successor to the Canon G1 X is coming to CES soon in Jan 2013. Although the G1 X has been received relatively well to the market, one of its biggest complaint was the aperture size of the zoom lens – f/2.8 – 5.8. At the long end, the larger sensor quickly looses its edge against other competitors that feature smaller sensors but brighter lenses. Unfortunately, the recent patent indicates that Canon may be planning for a 1.85x cropped sensor, paired with another f/2.8-5.8 lens design. At the long end, I’m not sure if this design will outperform fast enthusiast compacts such as Panasonic LX7 with its f/1.4-2.3 design. Hopefully, Canon will find a way to accommodate a brighter lens, along with some tweaks to improve its sensor performance further.
