Fuji announces FinePix HS50EXR

Fuji UK has announced a new super-zoom model – FinePix HS50EXR. This is an interesting RAW-capable super-zoom model that features 24-1000mm f/2.8-5.6 lens. It uses a 1/2.0-inch sensor which is a bit on the small size but most super-zooms use small sensors so this is not a big surprise. Given Fuji’s past history on their EXR-CMOS sensor, I expect this model to perform quite well. This sensor also encorporates phase detection cells which should help focus faster.

The HS50EXR will likely to compete with Canon SX50 HS more closely than constant f/2.8 aperture Panasonic FZ200.

Here are the specifications:

FUJIFILM is proud to announce a new addition to its popular top-end series of FinePix Long zoom bridge cameras. The new flagship FinePix HS50EXR features a manual zoom mechanism for high precision zooming over the huge 42x focal length range (24-1000mm). Boasting stunning autofocus speeds of just 0.05seconds*1 thanks to new Phase Detection pixels on its ½-inch EXR CMOS II sensor, this all-in-one camera is a high-speed performer and will capture images with stunning crisp quality.

  1. Do you this this will be already a replacement for the Fujifilm X-S1? Guess that will come later some months after the release of the X-20. Curious about the X-S2… specifications.

    • I don’t think this is a replacement for the X-S1. Perhaps Fuji is going with 2 models within the super-zoom RAW-capable line-up. Although I don’t own a superzoom yet, if I ever go into this, I would go with one of the constant aperture model. I have a 75-300mm lens that I sometimes use on the E-M5, ande at the long end (600mm equiv), its only useful during the daylight because I need very high shutter speed to not get any shake in the picture. This lens stops at f6.3 and E-M5 has a really good IS built in. So, at these very long ranges, at least for me, anything that approaches f5.6 is useless to me.

On the other hand, these new breed of superzooms with f2.8 at the long end, along with a very efficient small sensors that produce good images at ISO1600 sounds rather intriguing. I hope Fuji produces X-S2 based on the new 2/3-inch sensor just announced for the X20. And while at it, make it a bit more compact. :)

  2. Thats possible two RAW-capable models. On the pic this model seems a bit smaller also as the existing X-S1. Myself do own the Panasonic 100-300mm, f4/5.6 with E-M5. The results are better as expected! But fast shutter-speeds in dimmer light isn’t really possible of course. An X-S2 with an aperture of f2.8 or f2.8-4 at the full zoom range would be great!

    The X20 looks promising yes!
