Photographyblog has picked their compact camera of the year 2012. And I agree with their pick.
They picked Sony RX100 as the winner! Although I went the cheapo route by going with Panasonic LX7
when it was on sale, I do believe the LX7
is the most well rounded camera at the moment. Its just that the RX100
simply cannot be beat when it comes to IQ due to its sensor and its physical size. Once the price goes down, I may try it as well. The other interesting compact is the newly announced Fuji X20
with its new 2/3-inch sensor. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

No need to be ashamed of getting the LX7 instead of the RX100. Both cameras were in my consideration. I had a chance to play with the RX100, yes IMPRESSIVE IQ for a pocket compact, and yes very compact…but felt bit too compact for me. The RX100 focusing knob is very small and doesn’t felt as smooth as the LX3 (I haven’t played with the LX7 but I own an LX3). With aperture ring and aspect ratio controls on the lens and built-in ND filter, I think photographers who appreciate and want easy access to these controls would choose the LX7 over the RX100..I would. I tried changing these controls on the RX100 and using the very small buttons doesn’t make it easier. Perhaps with the RX100 you will get a real easy Point & Shoot, whereas with the LX7 you’ll get Control, Point & Shoot.
Last but not least…the LX7 looks sexier…IMHO.
Yes, after using the LX7 for a while, now I like it a lot. I moved from S100 so the extra controls are a joy to use.
If Sony can come up with a model slightly larger than the RX100, but with the same sensor, and a bit brighter lens at the long end, and few more dials and buttons, that would be perfect.
